Many people would love to improve their nose’s shape, symmetry, and the way it blends with the rest of their facial features. However, plastic surgery is a serious decision. In some cases, patients can opt for a rhinoplasty, or nose job, that uses non-invasive, non-surgical techniques to meet their appearance goals. Dr. Joseph Russell offers an innovative technique called a non-surgical rhinoplasty to patients in the Charleston, SC area.

What Is a Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty?
There are several ways to improve one’s appearance and facial harmony without surgery. Facial plastic surgeons who have been specially trained in these procedures use injected fillers, botulinum toxin (Botox®) and other treatments to give your nose an attractive shape and proportions. Special attention is paid to how the new nose will work with your other features and unique face shape.
The most common fillers used are Restylane, Radiesse®, and Juvederm. Each of these has unique benefits and drawbacks. Restylane is preferred for most patients because it holds its shape well, causes minimal swelling, and is fully reversible if needed. Many patients prefer this type of rhinoplasty because there is no downtime, very little recovery, and because the results can be enjoyed immediately.
There are several reasons that people choose this type of rhinoplasty. It is less expensive and less invasive than a typical nose job. In many cases, it can have the same result as a surgical procedure. Although it is not a permanent solution, the effects of a more streamlined and attractive appearance are immediate and less expensive and can allow a patient to “test drive” what their nose would look like after a permanent, surgical rhinoplasty.
How Is a Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty Performed?
This procedure is performed in our medical clinic using injections, with no incisions or general anesthesia needed. First, if needed, botulinum toxin is used to lift certain parts of the nose. For instance, a droopy or low nose tip can often be lifted by relaxing a muscle called the depressor septi in the midline of the nose. A more upturned look with a feminine curve can also sometimes be achieved with this type of injection.
Second, fillers are used to reshape the nose in a subtle manner. These can make your nose more symmetrical, fill in imperfections, and hide unsightly bumps.
The entire procedure is fast and requires no recovery time. Patients may notice transient swelling and redness on the day of the injection. Unlike surgical rhinoplasty, there is usually no bruising or downtime.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
There are several limits to this type of rhinoplasty. It cannot give patients a smaller nose or give patients a smaller nose bridge; only surgery can make those results possible. However, it can be used to diminish bumps and other asymmetries. It can be used to make the nose appear straighter and more attractive.
In addition, this kind of rhinoplasty can be used to give more shape or size to a flat nose bridge. Some ethnicities have flat noses that are easily lifted and sharpened without surgery. This procedure also can be used to fill dents or indentations left by trauma or by prior cosmetic procedures.
In general, the best candidates are ones who want a new nose shape but are happy with the overall size of their nose. A plastic surgeon experienced in this procedure can tell you whether this type of procedure will help you to meet your unique goals.
